Election: CBN disburses cash to INEC state chapters
Cash payments to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) offices across the country for election logistics have started to be made by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
This has allayed concerns that INEC wouldn’t be able to obtain cash from the CBN due to the current shortage of naira notes as a result of the CBN’s adoption of a cashless policy.
An INEC national commissioner reportedly claimed that branch controllers of the CBN had been directed to distribute the money to INEC offices in the states.
According to reports, the state RECs had submitted funding proposals to the CBN based on the demands of each state for transportation and other logistical needs.
Meanwhile, the Oyo State REC, Dr Adeniran Teller, has confirmed the reception of cash from the CBN.
Teller made the disclosure in a chat with newsmen on the preparedness of the INEC state chapter for the election.
INEC national chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, had earlier explained that even though most of its payments are done electronically, it would still need cash to carry out some activities.
