APC awaits Buhari’s directive to screen presidential aspirants

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday released a revised timetable for the screening exercise of aspirants for the governorship, senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly but not the presidential.

According to a source who spoke to Chronicle NG at the APC secretariat in Abuja, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC is waiting for directive from President Muhammadu Buhari.

Chronicle NG gathered that the APC wants to prune the number of presidential aspirants and have been hinted of a planned meeting between President Buhari and the presidential aspirants.

The APC have twice suspended the screening of presidential aspirants and will only screen more than one aspirant if the move for consensus fails.

“Mr President will push for a consensus candidate at the meeting with the presidential aspirants. It is only if some aspirants insists that they will not step down that the screening exercise of more than one aspirant will be conducted.

According to another source, the meeting which is likely to be held on Wednesday will see President Buhari announce his preferred candidate.

“The President will be meeting with the APC governors before meeting with the APC National Assembly caucus and then the presidential aspirants.”

The APC aspirants expected to be at the meeting include Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Senate President Ahmad Lawan, former Minister of Transportation, Hon Chibuike Amaechi; Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi and ex-Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.

Other aspirants are former Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajuba; ex-Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio; former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha; former governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun and Ekiti State governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

Pastor Tunde Bakare; Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello; business mogul, Chief Tein Jack-Rich are also presidential aspirants in APC.
