Nigeria vs CAR: Super Eagles suffer shock defeat in Lagos

Nigeria suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat to the Central African Republic in their 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifying fixture on Thursday.
Substitute Karl Namnganda, who plays in the French fourth tier for Les Herbiers, latched on to a long ball which the Super Eagles defence had failed to clear to score in the 91st minute in Lagos.
It was Nigeria’s first loss at home in a World Cup qualifier since October 1981 when they lost 2-0 to Algeria in front of 80,000 fans in Lagos.
Nigeria remain top of Group C with six points from three matches, but Central African Republic are now just two points behind Gernot Rohr’s side after registering their first win.
The three-time African champions struggled to break their visitors’ defence at Teslim Balogun Stadium with no incisive attempt at goal.
In the absences Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi, Brentford’s Frank Onyeka and Rangers star Joe Aribo got the nod to start for Nigeria while Francis Uzoho was in goal ahead of Maduka Okoye and Daniel Akpeyi.
