Ese Brume has won a bronze medal in the women's long jump event

Ese Brume has claimed Nigeria’s first medal at the Tokyo Olympics when she won a bronze in the women’s long jump in the early hours of Tuesday.

Brume finished with 6.97m behind World champion Malaika Mihambo of Germany after she made a jump of 7.00.

United State’s Brittney Reese won silver with a leap of 6.97m.

Ese Brume is a three-time African senior champion in the long Jump and holds a personal best of 7.17 m.

She is the African junior record holder in the event and also a five-time African junior champion in athletics. In 2021, her younger brother Okeoghene Brume broke the African u-18 100 meter record with 10.13 s.

Brume was the long jump gold medalist at the 2013 African Junior Athletics Championships, 2014 Commonwealth Games, 2014 African Senior Athletics Championships and 2015 African Junior Athletics Championships.

At the 2016 Olympic Games, Brume placed 5th in the Long Jump final with a leap of 6.81m.
