Virgil van Dijk has signed a contract extension until 2025 at Liverpool

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has extended his contract with the Reds until the summer of 2025 joining a list of other players to commit their future to the club.

The 30-year-old, who was under contract until 2023, follows Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Alisson in signing new deals with the club this summer.

Van Dijk played just five league games last season, as he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in October.

He returned to action in pre-season and is expected to feature from the start of Liverpool’s Premier League campaign.

Since joining Liverpool for £75m in January 2018, Van Dijk established himself as one of the most influential defenders in the Premier League and played every domestic minute as the Reds won the title in 2019-20.

His injury early in the 2020-21 campaign was seen as a significant moment in the club’s season and further injuries to Joe Gomez and Joel Matip saw manager Jurgen Klopp experiment with midfielders and inexperienced names in central defence.

Netherlands international Van Dijk subsequently chose not to play at the delayed European Championship this summer in order to focus on his rehabilitation.

The former Celtic and Southampton defender has made 130 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, who begin their 2021-22 Premier League campaign at Norwich on Saturday.
