An explosion outside Kabul airport killed at least 13 people, including children, and wounded many Taliban guards, a Taliban official told Reuters.

Confirming the attack on Kabul airport, Pentagon spokesperson, John Kirby wrote on Twitter. “We can confirm that the explosion at the Abbey Gate was the result of a complex attack that resulted in a number of US and civilian casualties.

“We can also confirm at least one other explosion at or near the Baron Hotel, a short distance from Abbey Gate. We will continue to update,” he said in a tweet.

An eyewitness to the attack outside Kabul airport has told a reporter at the scene that the blast was “really powerful”.

“Where we were, there was suddenly an explosion,” the man said in footage shared by Reuters.

He said he saw “at least 400 to 500 people” in the immediate area and described some of the victims as “foreign forces”.

“We carried the wounded here on stretchers and… my clothes are completely bloodied,” he said.
