Chelsea star Danny Drinkwater has been banned from the roads for 20 months after admitting drink-driving.

The midfielder, 29, was two-and-a-half times the legal alcohol limit when he crashed his £125,000 Range Rover through a wall in Cheshire in April, causing £50,000 worth of damage to his car.

He was arrested at the scene after giving a reading of 87 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, with the legal limit being 35 microgrammes.

The three-cap England international, who won the 2016 Premier League title with Leicester City, must also carry out 70 hours of community service.

Drinkwater, of Bollington Lane, Nether Alderley, Cheshire, had two female passengers in the car when he crashed it at around 12.30am on 8 April, suffering a graze to his head.

He admitted drink-driving at Stockport Magistrates’ Court during a brief hearing before District Judge Mark Hadfield on Monday.

Drinkwater signed for Chelsea in 2017 for £35m but has failed to make his mark at the club and has not played a competitive game for 13 months.

He started his football career as a trainee with Manchester United and has also played for Watford, Huddersfield, Cardiff and Barnsley.
