A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Abubakar Sidiq Usman has called on Nigeria’s Senate President Bukola Saraki to resign his position following his defection from the ruling party.

He cited the decision by Senator Godswill Akpabio to do the honourable thing and resign as Senate Minority Leader having declared his intentions to leave the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress.

Sidiq reckoned that Saraki should resign as Senate President because he was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

“This should not be a topic for debate if the Senate President has any integrity. He was elected on the platform of the APC and since he has left for PDP, he should resign.

“Akpabio has not officially defected to the APC but he has taken all the honourable steps. He has resigned as Senate Minority Leader so that there is no confusion.

Sidiqu noted that the constitution is very clear on the matter, adding that, there is no democracy in world where a legislator is elected to a leadership position under a particular platform and then holds on to the same position after moving to another platform especially when his new found platform is in the minority.

“All the rumours that they are trying to impeach him (Saraki) is just a cheap tactics deployed by him and the opposition to distract citizens from their atrocities.

He explained that President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo have nothing to do with impeaching Saraki.

“The President is a man of integrity and so is the Vice President. They will never meddle in a process that is shady. All talks that the VP is overseeing a coup is a blatant lie only unsuspecting Nigerians will fall for it,” he said.
