Sagamu residents turned out en masse to watch Anthony Joshua fight Carlos Takam

The heavyweight fight between Anthony Joshua and Carlos Takam at the Principality Stadium was a global showpiece.

It was one that got boxing and non-boxing fans staying up late but in Sagamu, Ogun State it was more than a fight.

It was an opportunity for the people of the city to brag and lay a claim to the roots of Joshua, who is arguably the biggest heavyweight boxer around.

On social media with #SagamuBoyOnKwese , Sagamu was trending for a justifiable reason. Hundreds of people had packed themselves into Joshua’s family house to watch the fight thanks to Kwese Nigeria.

Baba Joshua Memorial Hall was no different from the Principality Stadium and the anxiety, expectations and support was no different.

The fight also united the young and old as they all agreed who the winner of the fight should be.

They have a world champion of their own and were ready to him off as much as they can.

They watched the fight eagerly and when Joshua was named winner on points the rapturous noise that greeted the judgement matched the expectation of the people.

Beyond the fight, they want Anthony Joshua to come home, to Sagamu and share some of his success with them.
