Businessman goes to jail for stealing umbrellas

A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Friday sentenced a 30-year-old businessman, Zakari Abubakar, to two months imprisonment for stealing four umbrellas.

Abubakar of Kado Fish Market, Abuja, was arraigned on a count charge of theft.

The convict pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.

The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, gave the convict an option to pay N5, 000 fine, and warned him against taking to crimes in future.

Sadiq ordered that the recovered Umbrellas be returned to the owner.

He also ordered the convict to pay restitution of N7, 000 for one missing umbrella.

The prosecution had alleged that the convict stole four umbrellas belonging to marketers at Gwarinpa Tipper Garage, Abuja.

The prosecuting counsel, Dalhatu Zannah , had told the court that the convict committed the offence on Feb. 28 at about 9 p.m.

He told the court that the convict was arrested by the market security guards, led by one Rilwan Suleman and his team.

The prosecutor said that during police investigation and interrogation, the convict admitted committing the offence and three umbrellas valued at N21, 000 were recovered from him.

Zannah said one umbrella valued at N7, 000 was not recovered and the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.

Section 287 stipulates five years imprisonment for stealing, with an option of fine or both. (NAN)
