Hal Robson-Kanu says Nwankwo Kanu influenced his decision to wear No. 4 jersey

So, why was Hal Robson-Kanu wearing the number 4 shirt for West Brom last night?

The Wales Euro 2016 hero came off the bench with 10 minutes to go in his sides’ 4-0 demolition of Burnley at the Hawthorns.

While he has continued to play a starring role in the national side, the striker has had to make do with a succession of substitute appearances for Tony Pullis’ side.

When he came on to the pitch last night, everyone seemed to be asking the same question….

Why number 4…?

It does seem an odd choice of number for a forward player. But he has now revealed exactly why he wears the number 4.

“It’s a few things… At the time it was the only single number available and I prefer wearing a single number, especially with such a long name, I think the single number looks a little bit better,” he said.

He also revealed that his heritage plays a part in the number on his back.

“Nwankwo Kanu, the Nigerian footballer because I have Nigerian blood in me and he’s got the same surname as myself. He used to wear the number 4 for Nigeria and he also played for West Brom as well.”

But Robson-Kanu doesn’t seem overly attached to the number, saying: “I’ll wear it for this season and see how it goes!”

He continues to wear the more traditional number 9 for Wales, and it seems to be doing the trick, as he has this week been nominated for the Fifa Puskas award.
