Lionel Messi and Mesut Ozil both showed exceptional class as the third round of matches on match day three was highlighted by the huge score lines on display at the end of the matches.
PSG canted to victory in a 3-0 mauling of FC Basel, Munich ran out 4-1 winners over PSV, Barcelona put Manchester City to the sword in a 4-0 rout and Arsenal gunned down Belgian champions Ludogorets 6-0 in the biggest demolition of the night.
Other scores included a 2-0 win for Borussia Mönchengladbach over Celtic and the same scoreline played out between Dynamo Kiev and Benfica.
Only Atletico Madrid labouring to a 1-0 win against Rostov, surprisingly all three winning teams were playing away from home.
The most competitive game of the night was played out between Napoli and Besiktas and once again the away side returned with all three points as they triumphed by three goals to two.
Mesut Ozil and Lionel Messi were privileged to take the match ball home, after scoring hat tricks while the only other player to score more than one goal was Aboubakar for Besiktas.
All other goal scorers only succeeded in beating the keeper once.
Bearing in mind that the pairing for these matches would be retained for match day four, one dares say “goals, goals and more goals”
Despite a heavy defeat at Nou Camp, Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola insists he will not change his style of play.
“There will be no change. Until the last day of my career as a coach I will try to play from our keeper,” he said.
“Sometimes there are mistakes and sometimes you have to kick the ball out, but most of the time, when we play good, it starts from there,” added Guardiola.
“Of course he knows what he did, but he has a lot of experience and he’s one of best goalkeepers in last 10 years, so I don’t have doubts about him.”
“We lost the game 4-0, but we are a new club, we are getting to know each other,” he said. “We are a club that for 35 years was not in Europe.
“We came here and played with huge personality but it is always difficult to play Barcelona with 11. With 10 the game was over. Until then the game was open.”
